How to Choose MMA Shorts: A Practical Buying Guide

Start with the rules, then compare fit, construction and care details before choosing shorts for your training.

The MMA Shorts campaign study in a charcoal training studio

Choose MMA shorts by the requirements of your session, your measurements and the actual garment details. Start with your gym or event rules, then check fit, construction and care information. A dramatic product photo cannot answer those questions for you.

The MMA Shorts catalogue is coming later. This guide explains how to evaluate shorts generally; it does not describe the specifications or approval status of a future product.

Start with where you will wear them

A conditioning session, a grappling class and a sanctioned MMA bout are different situations. Before comparing styles, ask your coach or organizer what clothing is allowed. Write down the answer rather than relying on a description such as “fight ready.”

For a documented competition example, the Association of Boxing Commissions and Combative Sports publishes attire requirements within its Unified Rules of MMA. The attire section excludes pockets, zippers and exposed hook-and-loop fasteners from fighting shorts or trunks, and limits how far the hem can extend. These are useful checks, but they do not establish approval for a specific garment or event. Read the ABC rules.

The currently linked document includes changes with a requested future implementation date. Your commission or organizer should confirm which rules apply to your bout.

Compare measurements, not size letters

Use the actual product chart and read its labels. Does it give body measurements or measurements of the shorts themselves? Is a waistband measurement taken flat, around the garment, relaxed or stretched?

Those questions matter more than whether you usually buy a medium. A size letter is a label within a particular sizing system. If the chart does not explain its measuring method, ask the seller before ordering.

Record your waist and hips, then check the product's instructions for any additional measurement. Do not substitute another brand's chart for the one supplied with the shorts. Our measurement guide explains the distinction.

Look past the headline features

Treat the product page as a checklist of information to confirm:

  • What is the stated fiber composition?
  • How does the waistband close or adjust?
  • Are pockets, fasteners or a lining shown and described?
  • What length measurements are supplied?
  • What washing and drying instructions apply?

If a claim such as “stretch” is important to your choice, look for an explanation of what the seller means. A photograph does not establish composition, stretch behavior or durability. A review of a different style does not establish the fit of the one you are considering.

Check the fit in the movements you need

When you can try the shorts on, follow the seller's fitting and returns instructions. Check the waistband and coverage while standing and through the movements expected in your session. Tell the seller exactly what feels restrictive or loose if you need help.

There is no single inseam or cut that this guide can recommend for every body and training context. The useful question is whether the particular garment fits you and meets the requirements of its intended use.

Read the practical details before paying

Confirm the total cost, supported destination, dispatch estimate, returns process and support contact. The FTC recommends reviewing shipping and return information when shopping online. FTC online-shopping guidance.

Finally, read the care instructions. Washing and drying directions should belong to the specific garment, including its trim and decoration. FTC care-label guidance.

A useful buying decision comes from clear information: permitted construction, understandable measurements, a comfortable fit and practical terms you can review before ordering.

The first collection is in development. This guide explains general considerations; approved product details will be published with the catalogue.
